I received a phone call last night from Daniel regarding an Australian kiter that showed up to Hefner yesterday.  This kiter was walking his kite around the point last night, on land, with the help of one of our regular kiters!?!  Come on guys!  It is everyone's duty to act in a safe and responsible way at our lake.  If a newbie or an out of towner is acting in a way that jeopardizes the safety of others, then STEP UP and talk to this person about the conduct at OUR LAKE!  Don't HELP them be unsafe!  All it takes is ONE accident that ends up on the news, and we are going kiting at Draper (sux), Overholser (sux), Thunderbird (sux) or Foss (great, but 1.5 hrs away!)...out of towners and newbs don't care about a kite ban at our lake...they will just move on...WE CARE!!!  Kite bans are real!  I know many of you don't believe it, but type it in to google and see how many hits you get...it is real!  You don't like confronting someone because they are acting unsafe...then start saving your money now...cause you're gonna be driving a lot more.

BTW...this doesn't just apply to the newbs and the out of towners...you see one of the “old guard” acting in an unsafe manner...STEP UP and confront them about their actions too!!!  Remind them that the newbs and out of towners are looking up to them, and that it is even more important for them to act responsibly...everyone is following their lead!

The number of kiters at Hefner has doubled this year, and will probably double for 3 or 4 years to come...become a responsible and safety minded member of our community and lets keep Hefner a kiting lake for years to come...if not, don't come to our lake!

  Classic Newbie Errors!!

Thought it was time to dust this one off...I wrote this last year.  Yesterday I met some guys at the lake that fit almost every aspect of this, so since the spring is coming...I thought it would be relevant to repost this to the front page.  If you have a Hefner Kiteboarding website...copy and paste it to your homepage!  We need to help all new people to this sport start right and safe.

I get a lot of phone calls from people interested in kiteboarding at Lake Hefner. Some people are just kicking the tires, but a lot of people have spent a lot of time thinking about how they are going to get out on the lake and shred it up. Ninety percent of these people make the same mistakes (including myself)...Here is how it usually goes;

See it, think it doesn't look that hard (cuz I'm a wakeboarder!).
Talk to your friends and talk one poor soul into doing it with you.
Get online and find a kite "deal" on ebay and buy it
Come to the lake and ask for help airing up the kite.
Find out that nobody will help because you haven't flown the trainer kite.
Buy a trainer kite
Fly a trainer kite
Pull your ebay gear back out, and talk one of the kiters at the lake into looking at your kite.
Find out that the kite you purchased is not made for the gusty shift conditions at Lake Hefner.
Process the answer...
Realize you wasted your money....
Depression....
Resolve....
Go take lessons in Padre
Come back a better kiter
Ask around and buy a kite built to handle Lake Hefner winds
Come out and play in the wind and waves
Become part of the gang at Lake Hefner

If you want to avoid spending a bunch of money on something that sux...ASK ME BEFORE BUYING!!! Or ask someone at the lake! Don't make the same mistake I made when I started! Wait to buy a kite until after your lessons (and resist buying a kite from the kite school...their wind conditions are different than ours!). Then come back to the lake and look to see what the good kiters are flying, talk to them, then see if you can find a kite that fits your budget....but don't go buy a kite first...you'll be wasting your money.

Check out this SWEET video of some of us in slow motion!!! This guy did an AWESOME JOB!!  A little of Jason, Steve, Tom and Daniel!!
